Privacy policy
The short version
SubSnip keeps track of your subscriptions and bills. We only keep what the app needs to do that. We never sell your data, there are no ads and no tracking, and you can export or delete everything from the app at any time.
1. Who we are
SubSnip is an independent app made and run in New Zealand. In this policy, “we” and “us” means SubSnip. You can reach us at support@subsnip.co.nz.
2. What we keep
Your account: your email address, and your name if you sign in with Apple and choose to share it.
What you add: subscriptions and bills, with their prices, dates, categories, notes, who they are for and who you share them with. Names of people you share with are only the names you type.
Your settings: currency, reminders, appearance and similar choices.
If you connect a bank: the bank name, the names and masked numbers of the accounts you choose to share, and only the transactions that show a subscription or bill (for example your Netflix payments). Your other transactions are read to find these, then thrown away. We never keep balances.
3. Bank connections
Bank connections are made through Akahu, a New Zealand open banking provider. You log in to your bank on Akahu’s screen, never in SubSnip, so we never see your bank password.
The connection is read-only. SubSnip cannot move money, make payments or change anything at your bank.
You can disconnect at any time in SubSnip, or at my.akahu.nz. Disconnecting, or deleting your SubSnip account, ends SubSnip’s access at Akahu and deletes the bank data SubSnip saved. Akahu’s own privacy policy covers the data it handles.
4. Where your data is kept
Your data is stored with our hosting provider in secure, independently audited data centres in Sydney, Australia. It is encrypted in transit and at rest, and each account can only read its own data, which the database itself enforces.
Australia has privacy laws comparable to New Zealand’s, and our providers are bound by contract to keep your information safe and use it only to run SubSnip.
Face ID, your secret code checks, notifications and the home screen widget run on your phone.
5. Who else sees it
Nobody we sell to: we don’t sell, rent or share your data for advertising.
Service providers that run the app on our behalf: our hosting and database provider, our encryption key service, Akahu (bank connections, only if you connect a bank), Apple (sign-in, if you choose it) and our app update service. They only process data to provide their service to us. Ask us for the full list of providers at any time.
Exchange rates come from frankfurter.dev. Only currency codes are sent, nothing about you.
AI: SubSnip does not currently send any of your data to an AI service. If we add AI features in future, they will be off until you turn them on, and this policy will be updated first.
We would only share data if the law requires it, and would tell you unless the law prevents that.
6. Keeping it safe
SubSnip locks with Face ID or your phone’s passcode. Two-step verification with an authenticator app is required to connect a bank, and you can hide subscriptions behind a secret code. Bank access keys are encrypted using hardware security modules validated to the FIPS 140-3 standard, and are kept on our servers only, never on your phone.
7. If something goes wrong
If a privacy breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we’ll tell you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner as soon as we can, as the Privacy Act requires, and explain what happened and what you can do.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your data while you have an account. When you delete your account (Settings → Delete account), your profile, subscriptions, bills, bank connections and saved transactions are permanently deleted straight away. Backups roll over and are gone within 7 days.
9. Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can ask to see or correct the information we hold about you. You can see and edit almost all of it in the app, and export it from Settings → Export my data.
For anything else, email support@subsnip.co.nz. If you’re not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
10. Children
SubSnip is for people 16 and over. You can track subscriptions for your kids, but children shouldn’t have their own account.
11. This website
We don’t use cookies, analytics or trackers on subsnip.co.nz, and it has no forms. If you email us, we only use your email to reply.
12. Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
Email support@subsnip.co.nz and we’ll reply personally.
